"Traditional name"
The name Amaru is commonly a male name.
Amaru is a Quechua word for a serpent, recorded in colonial Quechua dictionaries such as Gonzalez Holguin's 1608 vocabulary, and it names a serpent figure in Andean tradition. It also forms the second element of Tupac Amaru, the name of the last Inca ruler of Vilcabamba in the sixteenth century and later of the Peruvian rebel Tupac Amaru II. The name appears in United States birth records from 1996, and those records alone do not show which family tradition any particular Amaru comes from.
The pronunciation of Amaru is ah-MAH-roo.
